MMM: Using vintage in children’s bedrooms

My Pinterest boards, unconsciously, reveal that I am quite partial to a bit of vintage. Shabby chests, repainted cupboards, old-school chairs and desks all really excite my inner designer.

I’m no expert and wholly subscribe to the ‘if you like it, buy it’ school of thought, but I have asked someone who really does know a thing or two about picking great vintage pieces.

Catherine Williams from online vintage emporium Colporter is a huge fan. She has used brilliant flea market and antique finds to create real personality in the bedrooms of her three children.

She says: “When you are expecting a new baby there is a tendency to want everything brand spanking new. Your precious newborn could not have anything old.

“Whilst I subscribe to that for beds and bedding I think it is really nice to inject some character through vintage items. We could all go off to Mamas and Papas and buy the cot bumper, wallpaper, cushions and art to match. It looks nice but not particularly individual or imaginative. A bit identikit.

“If you are not convinced that vintage does not equal smelly then stick to old posters or maps which can be reframed to give a clean finish.

“Mum and Dad’s old toys such as an abacus or till look cool and if they have lasted until now will give many more hours of vintage fun for your little one. It is quite special to see an old favourite brought back into play, and so much more stylish.”
